5000 to call for PTPTN's repeal next month
Mar 30: Emboldened by recent statements from Pakatan Rakyat that it would abolish study loans under the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN), a special rally to call for its abolition is being organised by students group Solidarity of Malaysian Undergraduates (SMM).
The rally, to be held at Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur on April 14, aims to gather some 5,000 youth from all over the country.
Declaring support for the move is Gempur, a body representing students from the East Coast, who pledged to mobilise participants.
"We will join SMM and other student federations for this gathering," said Gempur president Syahmi Hazim.
"We stand by the view that PTPTN must be abolished. This demonstration should be extended to all Malaysians and should not be limited to students only. They include salary earners burdened by the debt and parents who have acted as guarantors," he added.
PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu had prior to this pledged the party's support for any rallies organised by students against PTPTN.
“When the students organise the rally, PAS will give its support,” he said.
PR announced that it would replace the study loans with scholarships as part of its policy to give free tertiary education for every Malaysian.
